Mary White Ovington papers, 1833-1951.

The papers include five diaries by Mary White Ovington, 1876-1936 (two diaries, 1876 and 1878, were written by Ovington as a child), and one expense ledger by her, 1902-07. The diaries mention some activities relating to her social work, including meetings with the Spingarns, but chiefly concern travel and family events. There are some legal and financial documents of Ovington; two carbons of letters by her, concerning literary matters; and three programs and a poster for religious events in the New York African-American community (1875, 1896, and ca. 1930s). There are also various documents relating to the Ovington family, including an announcement for a meeting of the stockholders of the Ovington Brothers Company. The papers also include five diaries (1868-1905) by Ovington's brother, Charles Ketcham Ovington, that mention business interests, travel, religion, and family; one ledger of charitable contributions (1933-48) by Ovington's sister-in-law, Ida Elizabeth Graham Ovington; two maps, one of Africa (1912) and one of the Catskill Mountains (1879); some legal documents concerning property in Haiti; and four photographs of scenes in New York City around the turn of the century.
